Essential Steps to Prepare Before Scheduling Your HVAC Service Call

No customer wants to spend more time on a service call than is absolutely necessary. Here’s a list of items you need to go through before placing a call with your HVAC contractor of choice.

Condensate Drain Issues

Issues with the condensate drain can be very common, particularly if it runs under the floor. Algae build-up can block the flow. Algae can be cleared by vacuuming out the drain line with a wet/dry shop vacuum. If your system is equipped with a removable float switch, pour a cup of algaecide in the access point two times per month. Be sure that the algaecide goes down the drain and doesn’t back up into the AC unit. If the problem occurs again, bring us in to help.

Filter Maintenance

If your AC or heating system isn’t operating properly, the problem could be a dirty or clogged air filter. You should check and replace them regularly. High-efficiency filters with dimensions that are too small can lead to air-flow problems. If that’s the case, use a less efficient filter. When you get your electric bill, check your filters. Change or clean them if they show signs of dirt and/or dust. If you wait another month before checking your filter, it will be twice as dirty. If you have pets, carpet, or live in a particularly dirty or dusty area, you may want to opt for more aggressive filtration and air quality measures.

Electrical and Airflow Checks

Circuit breakers and switches can be turned off accidentally when working in the electric panel. This is easy to miss, too. Even a simple power interruption can trip a breaker. Before booking one of our technicians, check your circuit breakers first. A circuit breaker may be in the garage, hallway, storage room, or utility closet. When checking it, push the circuit breaker switch hard to the off position before turning it back on. If it feels spongy or won’t go to the on position, schedule service. Vents are an important part of any cooling and heating system. Check vents, ducts, and grills for blockages that may be causing airflow issues. To avoid blocking the airflow, don’t store anything in front of the vents.

Thermostat Checks

Before purchasing a new thermostat, consider the following: Is your thermostat set to the proper mode (Heat, Cool, or Auto)? Is the fan switch set to Auto? Is the fan set for continuous operation? Is the temperature setting what you want it to be? If it’s a programmable thermostat, is it off? In a setback scheduled period? A thermostat purchased in a retail store isn’t the same as a professional model. You could wind up buying the wrong thermostat and burning out transformers or blowing fuses! Retail versions have a lesser warranty and they don’t feature professional advice specific to your system like you’ll get from one of our experienced technicians. Dead thermostat batteries can be overlooked very easily. Typically, thermostats are powered by the HVAC system transformer. Battery backup is in place in case of a power outage. However, some thermostats operate on batteries. If no numbers show on the thermostat screen, change the batteries. If your thermostat is battery-powered, ask our technician to install a power wire between the thermostat and the AC system.

Outdoor Unit Maintenance

Airflow to the outside unit is critical. This is where heat exchange occurs. Debris like leaves and branches can be sucked onto the coil surface and suffocate the unit. Clean the unit by removing large debris by hand and using a garden hose to rinse the coil. Do this with the power shut off. Maintain a three-foot minimum radius free of debris around the unit for good airflow. This can eliminate operational problems, too. Keep shrubs trimmed back. Don’t put in a fence or wall too close to the unit. Check for frost or ice. Check the indoor and outdoor units for ice or frost. This may appear where the pipes enter the unit. Systems working properly won’t be iced or frosted. Turn the unit off at the thermostat, but turn the fan switch on to thaw out the system. It might take two to four hours. DO NOT continue to run your system if freezing continues. The ice can damage the coil and cause leaks. Once thawed out and turned back on, with no air restrictions, it will continue cooling. If it continues to freeze, call us for professional help.

I’ve had WATTS as my AC contractor for about 6 years now and am very pleased with their overall performance and service. The office even called me to let me know the service technicians were running a bit late. I use Watts because they dependable and because they’re local in Polk County. In Florida, the last thing you want is for your AC to quit on you. With Watts, I never need to wonder if my unit is running efficiently or if they can respond if a problem comes up. Highly recommended.

So Rick came in and was very determined to get and approval on the spot. I explained that I was getting mor estimates for the job and he asked what price I would be comfortable with and Voila with a few short minutes in his truck he was able to bring me back a price that was in my range, on the high end but none the less. As i received my other estimates Rick followed up and ultimately I agreed to the job and scheduled installation. The morning of the install I received a phone call stating the unit they picked up was damaged and they would reschedule. After a few days with no follow up (defiantly not Ricks style) I assumed that they just didn't need the job. Then, randomly on a Friday, get a phone call from Xavier and they are in my driveway ready to do the install. Needless to say I was not prepared. While I was getting my life together with my dogs Lee go the install ready and install began. About 5 hours later with a little concrete dust in the air and all over everything, Scott the electrician comes in to finish the job. The electrical run looks great thanks to Lee but It's getting late and Scott has to run leaving Xavier & Lee to do the setup. The unit I purchased is WiFi enabled and I was hoping to connect it to Alexa. Xavier are A/C installers not Tech advisors so they referred me back to Scott and assured me that he would be out tomorrow to get the unit WiFi enabled. They asked for a google review upon payment and I told them it would depend on them getting the tech part of it done so here it is. Lee & Xavier have done their job well and are on to the next. I was so happy to have A/C Friday came and went without me even thinking about it, I assumed since it was the weekend I would hear from Scott Monday....... So Monday about 2 PM, after not hearing from Scott, I reached out to Lee to tell him I was fixing to leave my review and immediately Scott called me and stated he was doing research (like I didn't watch the same Youtube videos) and he would be back in touch (again). Here it is Wednesday not quite a week later and still not WiFi enabled. This is your typical take the money and run scenario. What happened to service after the sale? I even signed off on your contract stating you could come remove all the equipment if I didn't pay... but I paid anyway even though the service wasn't complete. Hopefully I'll never need the 10 year parts and compressor warranty, but as of now I still have a tech issue with no support. 9/4/25 ****update**** So it’s been a month at least and until today I have had no response. So i immediately called within 5 minutes of getting the response. The secretary stated that he was in a meeting and would call me back. Still dealing with my tech issue. I will update you as they update me. This is day one of them trying to make it right after 30 days… **Update 9/8/25** so Eddie did get Scot back over here and we both decided we all could have been better. He diagnose the new unit along with running technical support and decided it was a module that had gone bad. In the meantime I had been playing with the app and soon as he ordered the part and left the app. Ask me if I wanted to accept an invitation from the air conditioner itself. Voilà. Problem solved. The lesson learned here is taking the time to address all aspects of expectations saves bad reviews and wasted time and money on a second trip. The issue is now resolved

Just purchased the home and AC stopped blowing cold air. I assumed it was the capacitor. Called Watts and they were out a few hours later that day. The tech diagnosed it as the capacitor and walked me through what was wrong with it. He also noted that the pressure was high on the liquid side. He pulled all the panels and gave the coils a good cleaning. Runs great now. Very informative and answered all my questions along the way. Would highly recommend Watts to anyone.
